Dear Alumni and Friends:

Ron GravesYou can make a difference for the students in the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts.

Many of you have partnered with us to provide a quality education for our communication students. This year we have had an enthusiastic response from our annual donors resulting in increased support for the College scholarship program.

You have also helped us make strides in the area of unrestricted support. The dean and department chairs and directors can draw on these funds to provide student programs and special projects that might not otherwise be possible. The internship opportunities you provide give our students real-world experience, which in turn allows our new graduates to be competitive in the world of work.

Your financial support and the vote of confidence it demonstrates allow us to continue the good work that is being done in the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts.

Once again, on behalf of the faculty and students in the College, Thank You.

Sincerely,

How Do I make a gift?

Annual Giving Opportunities

Your annual gift designated to the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts, or to an academic department or unit, creates flexibility for the College--it is an investment for today. Collectively, the annual gifts from alumni and friends to the College create a significant impact. Gifts of $25, $50 and $100 provide a sizeable base of support throughout the year for generations of communications students.

Your annual gifts allow the College to support student activities, faculty development, and new ideas and activities within the departments. Annual giving funds are used to buy needed equipment and software and allow students to participate in national student activities, projects and conferences.

Visit the SIU Foundation website and give a charitable donation at http://www.siuf.org/gift.asp

In-Kind Donations

If you are unable to make a monetary donation, an in-kind, non-cash contribution from you or your company can prove to be just as valuable. Our students use a variety of editing equipment, video cameras, film cameras, and computer software, and such in-kind donations are extremely valuable to the College.

Endowment Giving Opportunities

Our current endowment simply does not meet the increasing financial needs of our students, nor does it generate the resources for us to compete with other public universities in attracting the best and brightest students. By creating an endowment, you are creating an investment in the future of the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts by perpetually guaranteeing income to support quality students, faculty, enrichment programs and research. These funds are designated by the donor for a specific purpose, and are held in perpetuity with only a portion of the investment income used annually.

Increasing our endowment so that it provides a steady and predictable flow of income is a primary objective of the College. With the changing economic environment, decreasing state support, and a national trend of decreasing support from corporations, endowment funds ensure the continuity of our programs and our ability to maintain leadership in communications education, service and research. In this environment, a healthy endowment is even more important, providing a vital advantage in a competitive world.

Named endowments require a minimum gift level. However, this minimum level of funding may be pledged over several years. Minimum gift levels vary by the designated use of the endowment. Named endowments may also be increased to a larger level at any time such as increasing a gift from a professorship to a faculty chair.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of gift may I make?
Alumni or friends of the College can provide support in a wide variety of ways. Financial gifts fall into two broad categories--outright or deferred gifts--both of equal importance to the College. Within these broad categories, there are several giving options. Annual gifts provide a collective, sizable base of support throughout the year. In-kind donations, or non-cash contributions, are just as valuable if you are unable to make a monetary donation to the College. Endowments are funds designated by the donor for a specific purpose, and are held in perpetuity with only a portion of the investment income used annually. In any form, your contributions to the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts sustain a tradition of excellence for current and future generations of communications students.

If I give to the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts, where does my money go?
You may designate your gift to one or more of several activities. For example, you may add to an existing scholarship, or specify that your gift be used by a specific department. You may also have your gift added to the College's general fund that provides support to areas of greatest need such as scholarships, new equipment and faculty development.

What is a matching gifts program? How do I know if my company has such a program?
Typically, your company will match your donation. Check with your company's finance or human resources office. Most companies will match gifts up to a certain dollar amount.

How do I ensure that my employer matches my gift?
The company will provide you with a matching gift form that should be sent along with your gift. The University will then process the form and return it to your employer.

What is an honor or memorial gift? How can I make this gift to the College?
An honor or memorial gift is one gifted in the name of a particular individual. Simply send your gift to the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts with a letter attached explaining whom you would like this gift to honor.

How do I ensure that my gift is directed to the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts?
General donations made to the University will not reach the College unless they are designated as a gift for the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts. Donations sent directly to our College do not need to be designated for any special purpose, unless you choose to indicate what you would like to support with your gift.
