News - Student News and Awards
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Daily Egyptian, the student newspaper at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, honored five staff members recently for their contributions to the award-winning publicationís success.
The paper is published five days a week while classes are in session in the fall and spring semesters, and four days a week during the summer semester. The newspaper circulates on campus and throughout Southern Illinois. It employs about 100 students, including journalists, photojournalists, advertising sales and production and business office workers.
Here is a list of those receiving recognition:
Harper, a sophomore in finance, started working with the newspaper in the fall 2008 semester. Award recipients show ability in meeting quotas and working well with clients.
Cochran, a junior, is the advertising production manager. In two years at the newspaper she also worked as a page layout/designer in the newsroom. She plans to graduate in December with a dual degree in journalism and communication design with a minor in art history.
Myers, a senior, studying radio-television, is an advertising representative. He started at the newspaper in February 2008, and took over one of their highest-yielding territories in October, where he currently works. After graduation he hopes to get a job in advertising, but would also like to find a job in television that allows him to travel.
Smith, a freshman in the news/editorial program, covered a variety of events and topics in his first year at the Daily Egyptian. In his first two semesters his beats included womenís volleyball to undergraduate student government and Saluki Way. He also received the Steven B. Hahn Memorial Scholarship.
Petty graduates in August 2009 with a degree in journalism in the news/editorial specialization. She served as the newspaperís editor-in-chief during the 2008-2009 academic year. She started at the Daily Egyptian in fall 2007 after transferring from Kaskaskia College.
